Qualifications

Bachelor's degree typical but not required. Industry-specific certifications (HubSpot Sales, Salesforce, MEDDIC, etc.) valued. Experience often weighted more than formal qualifications in UK B2B sales.

Experience

Junior SDR/AE: 0-3 years with strong outbound prospecting. Mid AE: 3-6 years with proven quota attainment. Senior AE: 6-10+ years with enterprise deal experience. Strategic AE: 10+ years with C-suite engagement.

UK salary ranges

Junior

£30,000-£45,000 base + £15-25k OTE (£45-70k total)

Mid-level

£45,000-£65,000 base + £30-50k OTE (£75-115k total)

Senior

£70,000-£120,000 base + £60-100k+ OTE (£130-220k+ total)

Working pattern

UK sales typically requires office presence for collaboration, with 2-4 days office for hybrid roles. Travel to client sites common (especially enterprise). London-heavy for B2B SaaS but increasing remote roles. Hours often longer than 9-5 due to client schedules.

Career progression

SDR → AE → Senior AE → Account Manager / Strategic AE → Sales Manager → Sales Director → VP Sales. Some move to specialisation (channel, partnerships, international) instead of management.

Recruiter pro tip

UK sales JDs need to be honest about quota expectations and historic hit rates. Top sales candidates ask 'what's the typical quota and historic team attainment?' — companies with realistic quotas (60-70% of team hits) attract better candidates than ones claiming 100% attainment (which usually means under-bid quotas with high turnover).
