Reference Letter for Career Change Template (UK 2026)
Why this matters
Career changers face a credibility gap with new-field employers — the new sector recruiter doesn't know what good looks like in the previous sector. The reference letter is the candidate's chance to bridge that gap by translating experience into transferable terms the new sector understands. Generic references fail this; bridging references work.

[On letterhead] [Date] To whom it may concern, I am writing in support of [Candidate name]'s application for [target role in new field]. As their direct manager at [Company name] from [start date] to [end date], I have direct visibility of their performance and the capabilities they bring. In their role as [Previous role], [Candidate name] was responsible for [scope]. Although the role was in [previous sector/function], the underlying capabilities they developed translate directly to [new sector/function] in the following ways: 1. [Transferable capability 1 — with concrete example from previous role and explanation of how it applies to the new field] 2. [Transferable capability 2 — with concrete example and explanation] 3. [Transferable capability 3 — with concrete example and explanation] Beyond these specific capabilities, [Candidate name] has demonstrated [working-style quality] consistently in their work with us, including [specific example]. This is the kind of underlying capability that doesn't change with sector or role type. I am aware [Candidate name] is making a significant career change. From my conversations with them, I know they have prepared seriously for this transition through [specific actions — courses, projects, volunteering, study]. They are not making this decision lightly, and I have confidence in their commitment to the new direction. I would recommend [Candidate name] for [target role] and have no concerns about their ability to perform once they have completed the natural ramp-up of any role change. Please contact me directly with any questions. Yours faithfully, [Your name] [Your role] [Company name] [Email] · [Phone]
Replace bracketed text [like this] with the writer's and candidate's details. Keep concrete examples concrete.
Step-by-step
- 1 Acknowledge the career change directly in the letter
- 2 Translate previous experience into capabilities relevant to the new field
- 3 Provide concrete examples — not just claims of transferability
- 4 Mention the candidate's preparation for the transition
- 5 Address the new-field recruiter's natural concerns directly
- 6 End with a clear recommendation acknowledging the ramp-up reality
- 7 Keep length 250-350 words
Common mistakes
- ✗Hiding the career change — recruiters notice the previous sector
- ✗Generic transferable skills claims without examples
- ✗Not addressing why the candidate is making the change
- ✗Pretending the new field is identical to the old — undermines credibility
- ✗Skipping the recommendation because the manager isn't sure about the new field
Recruiter pro tip
The strongest career-change references explicitly engage with the change rather than ignoring it. The recruiter in the new sector needs help bridging the gap, and the previous manager is uniquely positioned to do that bridging. References that translate 'led complex stakeholder negotiations in retail' into 'has the capability for senior account management in tech' are far more effective than references that assume the recruiter will do that translation themselves.
