Character Reference Letter for Job Template (UK 2026)

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

Why this matters

Character references are increasingly common in UK job markets where the candidate doesn't have direct work history (graduates, returners after long gaps, career changers, volunteers moving into paid work). The strongest character references give recruiters something they can't get from a CV — a sense of the person's reliability and character from someone who has seen them in non-work contexts.

[Date]

To whom it may concern,

I am pleased to provide a character reference for [Candidate name], whom I have known for [duration] in my capacity as [your role and how you know them — e.g., 'their secondary school Head of Year', 'their netball team coach', 'a family friend in a senior position'].

During the time I have known [Candidate name], they have consistently shown [quality 1 — e.g., 'reliability and follow-through']. I particularly remember [specific concrete example with detail — 2-3 sentences showing the quality in action].

Beyond this, [Candidate name] is [quality 2 with brief example] and [quality 3 with brief example]. They are someone who [behavioural observation that gives the reader a sense of who the person is].

In my view, [Candidate name] would bring [specific qualities] to [target role/role type]. I have confidence they will apply themselves seriously, learn quickly, and behave with integrity in their work. I would recommend them without hesitation.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to discuss anything further.

Yours faithfully,
[Your name]

Replace bracketed text [like this] with the writer's and candidate's details. Keep concrete examples concrete.

Step-by-step

  1. 1 Confirm the relationship and how long you've known the candidate
  2. 2 Choose qualities relevant to the target role (reliability, integrity, work ethic)
  3. 3 Include at least one specific example for each quality you claim
  4. 4 Be honest — character references that read as inflated are dismissed
  5. 5 Provide your role/title — 'family friend' is weaker than 'family friend, Director at [Company]'
  6. 6 End with a clear statement of recommendation
  7. 7 Keep length 200-300 words

Common mistakes

  • Generic claims like 'great person' without specifics — adds nothing
  • Pretending the relationship is professional when it's personal
  • Listing every positive quality you can think of — focus on 2-3 relevant ones
  • Writing as if you're the candidate's parent — unhelpful tone for character references
  • Forgetting to provide contact details — verifiable references are stronger

Recruiter pro tip

The most useful character references in UK job markets come from someone whose own role gives them credibility — a teacher, manager, board member, professional in an adjacent field. The reference doesn't need to comment on work skills; it needs to comment on character. The candidate's own CV will speak to skills. The character reference fills the gap of 'is this person who they appear to be?'
