How long does the UK hiring process take?

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

From the recruitment desk in 2026, mid-level commercial and tech roles are running 10 to 14 weeks end-to-end. Senior roles are taking 4 to 6 months. That's a noticeable stretch on 2022 numbers, when mid-level hires were closing inside 6 to 8 weeks.

The lengthening is driven by structural shifts, not single-cycle issues. Headcount approval has tightened — hiring managers can't sign off a role anymore without finance, sometimes the COO, occasionally the board. Interview rounds have grown from three to four or five, sometimes with a 'values' panel bolted on. Take-home tasks have made a comeback. Reference-checking is more thorough than it was three years ago.

Senior roles take longer for additional reasons. Shortlists are smaller and more carefully constructed. Multiple board sign-offs are common. Compensation negotiations involve restricted stock units, deferred bonuses, and sometimes independent legal review. The bottleneck is rarely the candidate — it's calendar-coordination across multiple senior decision-makers.

The practical implication for candidates: stop assuming offers are imminent at week three. Plan financially for a search that runs a full quarter. The candidates who get squeezed are those who quit their current role expecting to land somewhere within a month and find themselves three months in with savings draining and offers still in negotiation.

Where the timeline can compress: candidates with a referral often skip 1-2 stages. Internal moves typically run faster (4-6 weeks) than external. Specific employers — particularly American-headquartered tech companies that have streamlined for speed — can run a full process in 3-4 weeks if you fit a clear gap. But these are exceptions. The base rate is what to plan for.
