Interview · UK 2026

How do I prepare for an online assessment?

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

What you'll typically face. Numerical reasoning (math problems with charts and tables, time-pressured). Verbal reasoning (read passage, answer logic-based questions). Logical/abstract reasoning (pattern recognition with shapes). Situational judgement (workplace scenarios, choose best response). Personality questionnaires (no right answer; consistency matters).

Where to practice for free. Test publishers themselves — SHL, Saville Assessment, and Cubiks all have free practice samples. Practice Aptitude Tests (UK-focused, free practice with explanations). JobTestPrep has free samples (paid for full courses). University careers services often have access to comprehensive practice databases.

Practice strategy. Three phases: (1) untimed practice to learn the question types and find your gaps; (2) timed practice at slightly easier pace to build accuracy; (3) timed practice at real pace to build resilience. Aim for 80%+ accuracy in practice before attempting live.

Day-of preparation. Take the test at the same time of day you've been practising. Don't take it last-minute on a deadline; take it early in your window. Eliminate distractions: phone off, do-not-disturb on, full screen, water available. Read each question fully before answering — UK tests often have trick framing where the obvious answer is wrong.

Personality questionnaires specifically. There are no 'right' answers, but consistency across the questionnaire matters. Don't try to game it — assessment software detects gaming via consistency checks. Answer honestly but with awareness that you're answering as your work-self, not your home-self.
