How do I handle being asked about religion in a UK interview?

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

Recognise the question. Indirect approaches: 'Will you need time off for religious holidays?', 'Is there anything we should know about your background?', or even direct 'What religion are you?'. All are problematic.

Decline politely. 'I'd prefer to focus on what I can bring to the role' or 'How does that relate to the position?'. Don't escalate; redirect.

Don't volunteer. Even if you'd happily share your faith, volunteering normalises the questioning and disadvantages other candidates from minority backgrounds.

Document. Write down what was asked, by whom, when. If you suspect it affected the hiring decision, this evidence supports a tribunal claim within 3 months less 1 day.

Consider escalation. For serious or repeat patterns: report to recruiter (if external), HR (if internal), or EHRC. UK Equality Act protections apply with no qualifying period of service.

Treat it as cultural signal. UK companies that ask religion in interviews often have wider equality issues. Even if you'd be fine, the company may not be a great fit.
