How many jobs should I apply to per week?

I get asked this every week. Candidates burn out by week three of a search because they're applying to forty roles a week, getting no responses, and assuming the market is broken. The market isn't broken — the application volume is.

Spray-and-pray applications produce roughly 1-in-50 callback rates in the UK market right now. Tailored applications, where you've matched keywords from the JD, written a customised cover letter, and applied to roles where you genuinely fit 65%+ of the requirements, convert closer to 1-in-8. Eight well-targeted applications a week generate one interview. Forty cold ones generate less than one. The candidates who fastest into roles in 2026 are typically applying to 30-40 jobs total across their entire search, not hundreds.

Where tailoring matters most: the cover letter, your CV's top third, and the keyword overlap between your CV and the JD's must-haves. AI tools can help here — paste the JD and your CV into ChatGPT, ask it to identify missing keywords, then rewrite 3-5 bullets to fold them in. Don't ask AI to 'tailor my CV' generically; break it into discrete steps and check each output.

The other underrated lever is application timing. Roles posted on LinkedIn often hit 200+ applications within 24 hours — by day five, the recruiter has already drawn up a shortlist from the early submissions. Applying within 24-48 hours of posting can triple your visibility versus applying on day seven, even with the same CV. If you've got a small list of target employers, set up Google Alerts for their careers pages so you see new postings the day they go up.
