How do I switch between UK visa routes?
Who it's for
Anyone wanting to change UK immigration status — typically: Student → Graduate or Skilled Worker; Graduate → Skilled Worker (most common); Skilled Worker → Global Talent or Innovator Founder; HPI → Skilled Worker. Used for career flexibility, faster settlement paths, or avoiding sponsorship constraints.
Eligibility requirements
1) Currently in UK with valid visa. 2) Meet eligibility for destination route (salary, sponsor, endorsement, etc.). 3) Apply BEFORE current visa expires. 4) Some route-to-route restrictions exist (e.g., visitor → work routes generally not allowed inside UK). 5) For sponsored routes: have CoS or endorsement. 6) Documents and evidence specific to destination route.
Application process
1) Confirm switching is allowed for your specific change. 2) Get destination-route documents: CoS for Skilled Worker, endorsement for Innovator Founder, etc. 3) Apply online at gov.uk before current visa expires. 4) Pay application fee + IHS for new route. 5) Biometrics (often re-use). 6) Decision typically 8 weeks (UK in-country). 7) Once granted: settlement clock for new route starts from grant date (typically — check route-specific rules).
Costs and timings
Varies by destination route. Skilled Worker: £719-£1,500 + £1,035/year IHS. Innovator Founder: £1,191 + endorsement fee. Health and Care: £284-£551 + NO IHS. Total cost typically £2,000-£8,000 depending on route and length. Decision time: 8 weeks standard.
Common reasons for refusal
1) Cannot switch from your current route (e.g., visitor → work routes). 2) Don't meet destination route eligibility. 3) Application after visa expiry. 4) Insufficient documents for new route. 5) Sponsor or endorsing body issues. 6) Discrepancies between routes (e.g., Graduate Visa salary vs Skilled Worker requirement).
Worked example
Aiko was on HPI Visa. After 18 months, she had a Skilled Worker job offer at £75,000. She switched to Skilled Worker route from inside UK before her HPI expired. The 18 months on HPI did NOT count toward Skilled Worker's 5-year settlement requirement — her clock reset to zero on Skilled Worker. She viewed this as worth it because the job paid 30% more and provided long-term sponsorship. Total cost of switch: £1,500 application + £5,175 IHS = £6,675.
Recruiter pro tip
The single most important question when switching: 'Does my time on the current route count toward settlement on the new route?' For most route-to-route switches the answer is NO — your settlement clock resets. The exceptions: extending the same route doesn't reset; some specific switches preserve time (Skilled Worker to Health and Care can sometimes preserve). If your goal is settlement speed, sometimes EXTENDING your current route is faster than switching even if alternative route looks attractive.
Important: UK immigration rules and salary thresholds change frequently. Always verify current rates and rules at gov.uk before applying. For complex cases, consult a qualified UK immigration solicitor (regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or OISC). This guide is for general information only, not legal advice.
