UK Visa Guide · 2026
How does the UK Graduate Visa work in 2026?
Who it's for
International students who: (1) completed an eligible UK qualification (bachelor's, master's, or PhD) at a Home Office tracked sponsor; (2) currently hold or recently held a UK Student visa; (3) want to work in the UK without immediate employer sponsorship.
Eligibility requirements
1) Completed eligible UK degree (bachelor's, master's, or PhD-level qualification). 2) Currently or recently held a Student visa. 3) Education provider has confirmed course completion to UKVI. 4) Apply from inside the UK before Student visa expires. 5) No criminal convictions issues. 6) Maintenance funds proof not required (different from Skilled Worker).
Application process
1) Wait for university to report course completion to UKVI. 2) Apply online at gov.uk while in UK. 3) Pay £822 application fee + £1,035/year IHS (£2,070 for 2-year visa, £3,105 for 3-year PhD route). 4) Provide biometrics at IDV centre. 5) Wait for decision (typically 8 weeks). 6) On approval: receive 2-year visa (3 for PhD) starting from grant date. 7) Begin work or job search — no sponsorship needed.
Costs and timings
Application fee: £822. IHS: £1,035/year (£2,070 for 2-year, £3,105 for 3-year PhD). Total cost: £2,892 (2-year) or £3,927 (3-year PhD). Decision time: typically 8 weeks; priority not available. No path to permanent settlement via Graduate Visa alone — must switch to Skilled Worker or other route.
Common reasons for refusal
1) Student visa already expired before application. 2) Course not at eligible level (foundation courses, language courses generally not eligible). 3) University didn't report course completion before application. 4) Significant criminal convictions. 5) Course completed at a non-tracked sponsor. 6) Failure to provide course completion confirmation.
Worked example
Jin completed her MSc in Data Science at UCL in September 2026. While still on her Student visa, she applied for the Graduate Visa in October. UCL reported her course completion to UKVI. She paid £2,892 in fees + IHS and received a 2-year Graduate Visa starting from grant date. She started job-hunting immediately — no employer sponsorship needed. 14 months later she had a Skilled Worker job offer at £55,000 from a fintech and switched onto the Skilled Worker visa for the 5-year route to settlement.
Recruiter pro tip
The Graduate Visa is most valuable as a bridge: 2-3 years of work without sponsorship pressure, building experience and a track record. Use it strategically — most graduates who switch to Skilled Worker do so 12-18 months in, when they have credible UK experience and command higher salaries that meet thresholds easily. Don't waste the time with low-paid roles that won't get you to a sustainable Skilled Worker offer.
Important: UK immigration rules and salary thresholds change frequently. Always verify current rates and rules at gov.uk before applying. For complex cases, consult a qualified UK immigration solicitor (regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or OISC). This guide is for general information only, not legal advice.
