The handover is the last impression — it's what former colleagues talk about months later. UK references often mention handover quality explicitly when the new employer asks about reliability. The candidates whose handovers are documented, transparent, and complete almost always get strong references from their previous employers, even when the relationship was difficult.

Step-by-step

The single most valuable handover element is the 'decisions in flight' section. Successors can read project files; what they can't read is why you considered three options and recommended one. The candidates whose former teams thank them weeks later are almost always the ones who documented this thinking.
