Resignation Handover Plan Template (UK 2026)
Why this matters
The handover is the last impression — it's what former colleagues talk about months later. UK references often mention handover quality explicitly when the new employer asks about reliability. The candidates whose handovers are documented, transparent, and complete almost always get strong references from their previous employers, even when the relationship was difficult.

Replace bracketed text [like this] with your details. Keep the tone — that's what does the work.
Step-by-step
- 1 Start the handover document the day you submit your resignation
- 2 Update it weekly during the notice period
- 3 Share a draft with your successor (if known) or your manager mid-notice
- 4 Walk through the document in person before your last day
- 5 Provide a final signed version to your manager and HR
- 6 Offer post-departure availability — most ex-managers will only contact you about emergencies
- 7 Don't include personal opinions about people or politics — stick to facts and process
Common mistakes
- ✗Leaving the handover document until the last week — too late to be thorough
- ✗Including subjective comments about colleagues — these get back
- ✗Not handing over relationships explicitly — successors often inherit projects without context on the people
- ✗Failing to document decisions in flight — successors face the same decisions without your reasoning
- ✗Not transferring system access formally — creates security and continuity issues
Recruiter pro tip
The single most valuable handover element is the 'decisions in flight' section. Successors can read project files; what they can't read is why you considered three options and recommended one. The candidates whose former teams thank them weeks later are almost always the ones who documented this thinking. It takes 30 minutes per major decision and saves your successor weeks of re-investigation.
