Can I apply to multiple roles at the same company?

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

From the in-house recruitment side: most large UK ATS systems show recruiters when a candidate has applied to other roles at the same company, often with timestamps. Two recent applications to genuinely related roles is fine — the recruiter sees focused interest. Five applications across unrelated functions in a week is a flag — the candidate looks unfocused and is sometimes auto-screened out of all of them.

When multiple applications make sense. You're a strong fit for two genuinely related roles (e.g. Senior PM and Senior Product Lead at the same company, where the seniority and scope overlap). The roles are in different teams or business units that wouldn't share recruiters. You've waited 3-6 months between applications because the first one didn't progress and the role market has moved.

When multiple applications hurt. Applying to roles you're materially under-qualified for (e.g. applying to a senior role and a junior role at the same company in the same week — recruiters see this and conclude you don't have a clear sense of your level). Applying to functionally different roles (sales + engineering + marketing all in one company in one week — desperation signal). Reapplying to roles where you've recently been rejected (waiting <3 months between applications to similar roles is too soon — the ATS flags it).

The right way to handle multiple-role interest. If you're genuinely interested in 2-3 related roles, apply to your strongest fit first with a tailored application. Mention in the cover letter that you're aware of the related role and are flexible about which fits best. 'I'm applying for Senior PM, but I noticed you're also recruiting for Senior Product Lead — happy to discuss either depending on your team's current needs.' This signals focus rather than spray.

If a recruiter contacts you about a different role. Be honest about the applications you've already submitted. 'I applied for the Senior PM role two weeks ago, but I haven't heard back yet. Would the role you're suggesting be a better fit for my background?' This protects you from looking inconsistent if the two recruiters compare notes — which they often do internally.

Reapplications after rejection. Wait at least 6 months before reapplying for the same role at the same company. Wait 3 months before applying for a related role after being rejected for a similar one. The exception: the company's hiring manager has changed, or the role's requirements have materially shifted (you can see this in the new JD versus the old one). In those cases, a polite note in the cover letter acknowledging the previous application makes the reapplication clean. 'I previously applied for [role] in [month]. I noted that the requirements have evolved and the team has expanded — I'd like to be considered for this current iteration.'

Internal mobility variant. If you're already employed at a company and applying for an internal role, the rules are different. Most internal ATSs prioritise current employees; applying to multiple internal roles is usually treated as ambition rather than spam. But internal HR teams talk to each other — if you apply to roles in three different departments, expect those hiring managers to compare notes and potentially conclude you don't have a clear career direction. Pick your strongest internal fit and concentrate effort there.
