How to answer "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond"

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

Interviewers also phrase it as:

  • "Describe a time you exceeded expectations"
  • "Tell me about extra effort you've put in"
  • "When have you done more than was required?"

Why interviewers ask

Tests work ethic, ownership orientation, and the candidate's instincts about scope. Strong answers describe a specific situation where you took initiative beyond formal scope, with quantified outcome. Weak answers describe routine hard work as 'going above and beyond' — which suggests low calibration of what extra effort actually looks like.

Model answer

About [timeframe] ago I noticed [specific issue or opportunity that wasn't mine to fix]. The default was to flag it and move on, but I [specific extra action you took — owned it, built something, fixed it, escalated thoughtfully]. The reason I went beyond scope was [specific business or team reason — not 'because I'm hardworking']. The outcome was [quantified result] and the secondary effect was [team or organisational benefit]. The pattern I'd repeat is [self-aware note on when this approach is right and when it isn't].

What to avoid (common bad answer)

I work late a lot and I always go the extra mile when needed. (Routine effort framed as exceptional — flags poor calibration.) Or: I once worked through a weekend to deliver a project on time. (Working hard on your own scope isn't going above and beyond.) Both fail.

Structure of a good answer

  • 1 A specific situation where you noticed something not in your scope
  • 2 Specific extra action you took (not generic effort)
  • 3 Business or team reason for going beyond — judgement, not blind effort
  • 4 Quantified outcome
  • 5 Self-aware note on when extra scope is appropriate vs not

Common mistakes

  • Routine hard work framed as exceptional
  • Working long hours as the example — flags poor work-life calibration
  • Going beyond scope without judgement — can flag boundary issues
  • Story where the 'extra' was your own scope all along
  • No quantified outcome — flags effort-without-impact

Recruiter pro tip

The strongest answers describe an extra scope action with judgement: 'I noticed X wasn't mine to fix, but it was 5 minutes from my role's success, so I owned it for 2 weeks until it was resolved.' The judgement layer matters — going above and beyond on everything is unsustainable, so the candidates who land this question well show calibration about when extra scope is right.

FAQ

What if my role doesn't really have 'beyond scope' situations?

Stretch — every role has moments where you could have done less. Pick a moment where you chose more, with a clear reason.

Should the example be recent?

Within last 18-24 months ideally. Older examples flag stagnation in current role.

Is volunteering for committees or DEI work a valid example?

Yes, if it produced specific outcomes. 'I volunteered to lead the DEI hiring review and we changed our shortlist composition' beats 'I joined the DEI committee'.
