How do I claim UK working from home tax relief?

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

Who can claim

UK PAYE employees who work from home because their EMPLOYER REQUIRES them to (not by choice). Common qualifiers: no employer office available; required to live too far for office travel; required to work from home for specific reasons. NOT qualifiers: choose to work from home (hybrid); office available but you prefer home; informal flexible arrangement. Self-employed: different scheme (more generous home-office relief — £6/week minimum or actual costs apportioned).

How much you can save

Standard relief: £6/week (£312/year) flat-rate, no receipts needed. Tax saving: basic rate (20%) = £62.40/year; higher rate (40%) = £124.80/year; additional rate (45%) = £140.40/year. Higher amounts possible with actual costs claim and receipts (rarely worthwhile vs flat rate). Backdate claim: up to 4 years.

How to claim

1) CHECK eligibility — employer REQUIRES home working (not just allows). 2) GO to gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home. 3) SIGN IN with Government Gateway. 4) COMPLETE form claiming £6/week. 5) HMRC processes within 4-12 weeks. 6) TAX CODE adjusted (for current tax year). 7) BACKDATED claims (2-4 years): may need Self Assessment or written claim. 8) ANNUAL renewal needed in some cases — check after each tax year.

Common mistakes

1) Claiming when not eligible (hybrid workers post-April 2022 generally NOT eligible). 2) Not knowing about it — many genuine remote workers haven't claimed. 3) Not backdating (4-year window). 4) Mixing personal preference with employer requirement (must be employer-mandated). 5) Forgetting to renew/check annually. 6) Claiming higher actual costs without receipts (HMRC requires receipts for amounts above £6/week). 7) Self-employed claiming employee-route (different scheme).

Worked example

Tom (higher-rate taxpayer) is a fully remote engineer — his employer has no office in his region. He claimed £6/week × 52 = £312/year working from home tax relief. Tax saving: £124.80/year. Backdated 3 years: total £374.40 retrospectively. Ongoing £124.80/year. Total recovered for 5 minutes of online form: £374.40 + £124.80/year for as long as he remains genuinely required to WFH.

Recruiter pro tip

Post-April 2022 rules tightened significantly — most UK 'hybrid' workers no longer qualify. The test is whether employer REQUIRES home working. If your contract specifies remote-only, you qualify. If your contract is hybrid by choice or your office is geographically reasonable, you don't. Don't claim if you don't qualify — HMRC may audit. But if you genuinely qualify, this is a free £62-£140/year claim that takes 5 minutes online.

Important: Tax rates and rules change each tax year. Verify current rates at gov.uk before acting. NEVER use third-party 'tax refund' services taking commission — claims are free at gov.uk. For complex circumstances, consult a qualified UK accountant or tax advisor (chartered tax advisor — CTA). This guide is general information only, not tax advice.
