Can I claim UK tax relief for uniforms and work clothes?

Alex By Alex · 12-year UK recruiter · Updated April 2026

Who can claim

UK PAYE employees who personally pay to clean/repair/replace uniforms or specialist work clothing required for the job. Must be: (a) uniform identifying your job/employer; OR (b) protective clothing required for safety. NOT eligible: ordinary work clothes (suits, smart-casual without uniform identifier); clothes paid for/cleaned by employer; one-off clothing purchases.

How much you can save

Flat-rate allowances by industry (HMRC's standard rates without receipts): Healthcare (NHS workers etc.) £125; Police £140; Firefighters £80; Mechanics £120-£160; Construction workers £80-£140; Hairdressers £60; Chefs £140; Retail with branded uniform £60-£100. Tax saving (basic 20%): £12-£37/year per allowance. Higher rate (40%): £24-£74/year. Backdate 4 years: typical refund £40-£300 retrospectively.

How to claim

1) CHECK HMRC's flat-rate list (gov.uk/government/publications/income-tax-flat-rate-expenses-table-published-3-january-2017). 2) IDENTIFY your industry's allowance. 3) APPLY at gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/uniforms-work-clothing-and-tools. 4) PROVIDE Government Gateway login + employment details. 5) HMRC processes — typically PAYE code adjustment for current year; refund cheque for backdated. 6) ONGOING: usually doesn't need annual renewal once approved (continues until circumstances change).

Common mistakes

1) Not knowing about it — vast majority of NHS/blue-light workers eligible but unclaimed. 2) Claiming for ordinary office wear (not eligible). 3) Claiming when employer provides cleaning. 4) Missing 4-year backdate. 5) Not knowing your specific allowance — looking up wrong industry. 6) Stopping claim without telling HMRC (continues until you cancel). 7) Confusing with HMRC's £60 standard rate (only used if no industry-specific rate applies).

Worked example

Aisha (NHS nurse, basic-rate taxpayer): NHS uniform allowance £125/year × 20% = £25/year tax saving. Backdated 4 years: £100 refund. Ongoing £25/year. Total recovered for 5 minutes of online form: £100 + £25/year for length of NHS career. Multiplied across 7+ years' future career: £200+ more saved automatically.

Recruiter pro tip

Many UK NHS/healthcare/blue-light/trade workers are eligible but never claim. The simplest path: if you wear a branded uniform or required protective clothing AND wash/maintain it yourself, you're almost certainly eligible. The flat-rate amounts seem small per year (£60-£185) but add up over careers. Combined backdated claim: typically £100-£500. Ongoing: £30-£75/year. Total career value: £500-£2,000+. Claim once — most allowances continue automatically.

Important: Tax rates and rules change each tax year. Verify current rates at gov.uk before acting. NEVER use third-party 'tax refund' services taking commission — claims are free at gov.uk.
