When are the best UK hiring windows?

Twelve years of UK recruitment data shows three clear seasonal hiring patterns:

  • January – March: peak hiring window. Annual budgets reset, new headcount approved, replacement hires planned for departures over the holidays. About 35-40% of UK annual hiring happens in this window.
  • September – November: secondary peak. Q4 budget releases, Christmas-cover hires, and post-summer interviews catch up. About 25-30% of annual hiring.
  • July – August: hiring slowdown. Holidays + budget freezes + senior decision-makers absent. Worst time to apply unless the role was opened pre-July. About 8-12% of annual hiring.
  • December: dead month for new searches but strong for offer acceptances and resignations (positioning for January starts).

If you're considering a job change, time your search to start applying in early January or late August/September. Resignations during Q4 with January start dates are particularly common in the UK.
