I'll declare my bias upfront — this is my job. UK recruiter salaries split into two very different worlds: in-house (predictable base, modest bonus) and agency (lower base, uncapped commission). An in-house tech recruiter at a scale-up can clear £85k base by year five. An agency recruiter on a strong desk can double that, but maybe one in five gets there and the burn-out rate is brutal. Sector specialism is the single biggest pay lever — generalist recruiters are commoditised, while tech, exec search, life sciences and financial services recruiters command 20-40% premiums. The other quiet money-maker is internal Talent Acquisition leadership in scale-ups going through funded growth rounds.

Recruiter negotiation tip

Recruiters are the worst negotiators of their own salaries — I see it constantly. Three things shift the number. First, never accept the first base without seeing the bonus or commission scheme in writing; OTE conversations are where the real money is. Second, if you're moving in-house from agency, anchor on your last 12 months' total earnings, not your base — most hiring managers expect this. Third, ask about the hiring forecast: if the company is planning to scale headcount 40% in the next year, your offer should reflect that you'll be carrying the load. Sign-on bonuses are also far more common in TA than candidates realise, particularly when you're walking away from agency commission accruals.
